Can Allergies Be Treated with Chiropractic?

Do you wish there was an alternative to medication to relieve your allergy symptoms?
For some people, spring and summer is a time for the outdoors, sports, barbecuing, and other fun activities. For allergy sufferers, it’s a time for headaches, sneezing, body aches and trips to the pharmacy for medication!
Dr. Will can help alleviate your symptoms naturally.
If you’re experiencing hay fever or other seasonal allergies, chiropractic treatment can help to relieve the symptoms and discomfort with a holistic approach.
When allergies flare up at the end of the summer season it’s often due to ragweed allergies which is the most common cause of hayfever. 1 out of 5 people experiences hayfever to varying degrees.
My wife suffers badly from seasonal allergies. As you can imagine it is heartbreaking to see her feeling so poorly. For many years she tried every over the counter drug that you can imagine, Zyrtec, Benadryl, Allegra and many more to no avail. She is constantly using saline to moisten her nasal passages and moist heat to try to relieve sinus pressure.
With the decreasing air quality in the Hudson Valley region along with a serious increase of pollen, my wife’s symptoms and discomfort have increased dramatically over the years. The good news is she is married to a Chiropractor and knows exactly who to see for some relief.
At McKenna Family Chiropractic, I treat many allergy sufferers on a regular basis.
Patients come in with puffy faces, headaches, pressure on the back of the skull and circles around their eyes from lack of sleep. They tell me how they can’t stop sneezing, coughing and wheezing. They complain of body aches, sore throats and feeling like they have the flu.
It’s hard for people who don’t experience all this to imagine feeling so poorly just from allergies”? But if you are an allergy sufferer you know it’s not a fun way to enjoy the spring and summer. Many of my patients have tried multiple allergy medications just like my wife and experienced limited success in relieving their symptoms and finding comfort.
How does a Chiropractor treat and alleviate allergy symptoms?
When someone is suffering from allergies, they experiencing inflammation and swelling in their sinuses and nasal passages. That combined with an overproduction of mucus leads to a great amount of pressure and debilitating headaches.
Chiropractic treatment of seasonal allergies focuses on the upper cervical to help take the pressure off the nerves that control the Immune system, the blood flow to the brain and tightened neck muscles. A deep pressure massage is performed on the tender areas at the base of the skull.
This begins lessening the pain of the allergy sufferer. A massage is performed on the frontal area of the face, focusing on the sinus areas and above the eyes. Patients are generally now able to successfully express the mucus from within their sinuses and alleviate the pain of so much congestion. Chiropractic care as an allergy treatment helps the sinuses drain and ultimately relieves the pressure and headache the allergy sufferer is experiencing.

Years ago, after the first treatment I gave to my wife, she asked me what I did and of course, I lied to her and told her it was an allergy/sinus relief that I had invented! Fast forward many married years later and I still use this treatment for her on a regular basis as well as my patients.
In the Chiropractic world, many patients prefer a more holistic approach to health and wish to avoid taking medications. As their doctor, I try to provide a path to relief that fits their needs. By performing the treatment described above I am able to do just that. While Chiropractic care is not a cure for allergies it is a way to help alleviate the suffering that my patients with seasonal allergies experience.
